Vietnam720: Alex from An EFL Teacher in Vietnam is an avid photographer who loves to go around taking pictures of Vietnam, particularly of Vietnam culture. Here are some shots he is sharing with us, complete with his short and sweet captions.
In this picture you can see a couple ladies who were sitting behind us have some coffee and cigarettes. They were watching us, talking to us a little bit too. I just love these two ladies for the styles they represent. The one in the foreground who is smoking is wearing her pajamas which a lot of Vietnamese women do because of the heat; it’s comfortable wearing loose clothing that breathes. The woman in the background is really pretty and is really elegant, looking classy. Both came to the same cafe to sit and people watch. I snuck this picture of them by putting the camera on the table and turning off all sounds and flash. They had no idea I took this picture.

Today I had lunch with my old roommate, Martin. Outside the cafe we saw something that I wanted to share with everyone: the street shoe cleaner for hire. You can find these guys all over HCMC offering to clean, and shine your shoes for around one dollar US. There is so much labor available in this city, just not very many venues for work, so you end up getting all kinds of services that you wouldn’t have anywhere else, and it’s a very reasonable price.

I was coming back from lunch with my old housemate, Martin, and I saw one of my coworkers getting ready to ride her bike while in the parking garage. I thought this would be a good point to document about living in Vietnam. Many women here think that looking fair or “white” skinned is beautiful. Even though it’s really hot outside, they almost completely cover themselves with heavy sweatshirts, masks, gloves, thick socks, and sunglasses. I can’t imagine how they can put up with the heat.

I was walking to work this morning, and I saw a woman who is out every day selling various meats on the street. The kicker is that she sells it all without refrigeration. I wonder if it’s safe to eat. It’s common to see women selling meat in the mornings before it gets hot later on in the day, so I really wanted to get a picture of one this morning.
