Saigon Post Office, one of Vietnam tourists favourite travel site in Ho Chi Minh City, was designed and constructed by the famous architect Gustave Eiffel, the fellow who also built the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty. Built between 1886 and 1891, Saigon Post Office is a functioning and also the largest post office in Vietnam and worth visiting just for its architecture.

Faces of famous Frenchmen (look at the top of the photo below) and names of notable inventors.

Many visitors offer missed these 2 Stalinist statues by the sides of the Saigon Post Office. This one below is a celebration of the Soviet’s space congress which is why you’ll see the little ‘space shuttle’ by the side. The second image is a typical show of patriotism.

The interior of the Saigon Post Office is made up of 2 domes – one large dome at the main gate as shown below and a long dome shown in the next image. These 2 domes keep the building well ventilated and full of sunlight, which is gladly received by the bus loads of Saigon tourist coming and going.

The special thing about the 2 maps below is that although they are as old as the Saigon Post Office building, the details drawn are still sharply retained. Up till now, researchers are still uncertain about the material used to draw these maps. You’ll find on the maps captions in French, ‘Saigon et ses environs 1892′ which means ‘Sai Gon and its environment 1892′ and ‘Lignes telegraphiques du Sud Vietnam et Cambodge 1936′ which translate to ‘Telegraphic lines of Southern Vietnam and Cambodia 1892.

Visitors to this Saigon attraction who are lazy to walk further in to explore will be missing out on the souvenir store.

Telephone booth. Tip: on the opposite end, there’s one booth that is exactly the same but instead of telephones, it contains ATM machines of different banks in Vietnam. Most of them have the Maestro and Cirrus capability.

Beautiful tiles of the Saigon Post Office.

One of the many vendors outside the building selling you stamps, guide books, postcards…

Hi Ben,
The Saigon Post Office remains my favourite “tourist cum souvenir shopping” spots in HCMC. It’s just majestic like a palace. And have to agree that its a nice place to pick up the modest priced souvenirs without having to haggle since all goods are price tagged nicely.
Had a good shopping experience over here since the shopkeepers are not too pushy

Hey Roy,
