When you are on a Saigon tour and are on budget, head straight to the Saigon backpacker’s hostel area. The best thing about this area, beside the cheap accommodation and food, is that you can easily catch the daily lives of Vietnamese.

In this post, I’ll bring you on a Saigon Alley Tour to show you how a common Vietnam’s alley, the houses and the lives within looks like.

 

The starting point is about 10m to the left of Huynh Anh Hotel at 26/49A Do Quang Dau Street.

 
From here, it’s gonna be exactly like a maze where if you are not on the right way out, you’ll be hitting a dead end. In this case, simply back-track and keep heading down. But don’t sweat it. The whole idea of an alley tour is to enjoy catching glimpses of Vietnamese lives. The pictures below are some of the stuffs you will be seeing in this particular alley. Start to end should take not more than 20mins.

 
This last picture is the end point. It is distinctive in that a) it is the longest walkway and b) there are only 2 houses along this path compared to the others where it’s always tightly packed. By the end of this alley, turn left and it’s the Pham Ngu Lao Street and turning right will lead you to Bui Vien Street – both of which are still within the backpacker’s area.
