Giving Birth in Vietnam

I’ve tagged this article as ‘off topic’ and if you are looking for the regular Vietnam travel related post, you should give this a miss and return later.

This article is about an American, Tyler Watts, giving us an account on the birth of his 1st newborn in Vietnam.

In case you don’t know, I’m working full time on this website- Vietnam720.com. As a default, I have to read a lot on Vietnam, be it travel related or what others are saying about Vietnam. And this is the 1st article I’ve come across about giving birth in Vietnam. Because it’s so intimately and well written, I thought I want to share it with you guys. I hope you’ll enjoy this as much as I do. Here are some excerpts:

‘I was not endowed with a uterus or ovaries and thus have no entitlement to write about giving birth in Vietnam. But as the husband and father in the waiting room I thought it appropriate to write about my experiences’.

‘…I didn’t bat an eye at the level of quality at Tu Du (hospital) and never felt worried for the safety of my wife or daughter. I tend to fall in the overly optimistic category for things Vietnamese and it hasn’t done me wrong yet’.

‘Most of my time was spent in the waiting room, an open air space on the ground floor which resembled an airport boarding gate more than the hospitals I’m used to. To add to the airport effect were two LCD screens in the front which would announce mother’s names and the time of birth. I kept imagining “Tyler Watts your baby is cleared for take-off” to come over the loudspeaker’.

‘Where everywhere we went, a crowd gathered around to see the surprisingly white baby’.

‘And then after a few short hours the whirlwind died and we settled in to that final peace I had longed for as grandma and grandpa relaxed in chairs in the hall, the family in the next bed slumbered, and I climbed up into the twin-sized bed and held my wife with our daughter between us. And a wave of joy filled my heart again’.
