This post on Banh Xeo An La Ghien is to recommend a restaurant chain that sells Banh Xeo, or ‘Vietnamese Pizza’, in a clean and comfortable environment in HCMC, Saigon.

For a start, Wikipedia describes Banh Xeo this way: ‘Banh xeo (literally “sizzling cake”) are Vietnamese savory pancakes made out of rice flour, water, turmeric powder, and sometimes coconut milk (in the Southern regions), stuffed with slivers of fatty pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts and then pan fried. Traditionally, they are served wrapped in mustard leaf, lettuce leaves, and stuffed with mint leaves, basil, fish leaf and/or other herbs, and dipped in a prepared nuoc mam called nuoc cham (Vietnamese fish sauce thinned with water and lemon)’.

There are quite a few places that sell Banh Xeo in Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon. One of them is being featured in this post. But I’m recommending Banh Xeo An La Ghien because, as mentioned at the beginning, they are set in a clean and comfortable environment. Although I’m no foodie, you can take it from me that the ‘Vietnamese Pizza’ in Banh Xeo An La Ghien are very very good.

There are 3 branches of Banh Xeo An La Ghien in Saigon. I’ve only been to 2 of them and both have indoor and outdoor sittings.

The menus below will show you that Banh Xeo An La Ghien offers Banh Xeo at very reasonable price, averaging only US$2+ each. They also have a wide range of side dishes. And the menus are in English with descriptions of how every Banh Xeo is different from the other.

For the side dish in Banh Xeo An La Ghien, I recommend Banh Khot which is a Southern Vietnam specialty consisting of small, fried rice flour pancakes. Pictured first below, this Banh Khot cost only US$2+ for a serving of 6. Another side dish to try is the US$1/bowl mushroom porridge.

The 2 pictures below are what you’ll need to go with your Banh Xeo. My tip for you is to throw in a little bit of chili in the fish sauce to spice up the taste. Even if you can’t take things spicy, you’ll find that a little chili will make a lot of difference.

Now, the right way to have your Banh Xeo is to roll it up with a few different leaves and have it dipped in fish sauce. The video below will show you how to roll a Banh Xeo.

The next video below is from Banh Xeo An La Ghien themselves. Pity that it’s in Vietnamese but still it will give you a good idea of how dinning in Banh Xeo An La Ghien is like.

Banh Xeo An La Ghien
Address: 74 Suong Nguyet Anh Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. The is the Banh Xeo An La Ghien featured in this post. It is also nearest to the Saigon backpacker’s hostel area.

Thanks for the link but I have to disagree. This is Banh Xeo An Khong ghien. Banh Khot is even worse AND it was expensive.

Please try Banh Xeo Muoi Xiem(?) on Pasteur and kindly give review?
