Got invited to An Vien Restaurant in Saigon recently by a lovely family from Singapore. Thanks to them, I can, for a change, depart from my US$1 or US$2 Vietnamese food recommendation and show you how an upscale restaurant in Saigon is like. While, to me only, this is what I’ll call ‘the finer things in life money can buy’, the truth is that all the 7 delicious dishes below came only to US$56. You will find An Vien Restaurant Saigon worthy of your visit given the set up and the reasonable prices.

Forgive me for the poor quality images in this post. They were all taken with my humble hand phone. The next 2 pictures are the worst but I’m putting them up here because I want to show you that this is not just a good restaurant with good food. An Vien Restaurant is said to be owned by the wife of a famous interior designer cum furniture maker in Vietnam. Thus special care are given in creating a charming atmosphere and charming they are.

Goi, which is a term for Vietnamese salad. In there are crackers, lotus stem, pork and shrimp.

The next dish was Banh Beo which is round rice flour pancakes topped with minced shrimp.

This is the Vietnamese fried spring roll not needing any further introduction. The spring rolls here are very good.

The next dish from An Vien Restaurant is Banh Xeo- what we foreigners call the Vietnamese pizza.

Mushroom and chicken rice cooked in clay pot.

Cauliflower with prawns. This is good but among all the others, is the most ‘normal’.

And the best from An Vien Restaurant – fish soup with dill which is some kind of a herb. Very very good.

At the end of dinner, the waiter automatically served us each with a cup of tea. The yellow thingy above the lotus leaf is sugar coated lotus seed which u can eat it on its own or dump it into the tea. The seed is nice.

A shout out to Stanley and his family- thanks again for the dinner treat!
