10 things you didn’t know about Saigon Tweetup 17Aug10

01) Location, location, location.
I had prepared 15 locations to pitch my idea of a Tweetup and a networking event. Xu Saigon was the 1st I approach and they said yes immediately.

02) Numbers.
When Elizabeth, the lady boss of Xu, asked me how many I was expecting, I told her “I’ll give you US$1000.00 if I cannot bring in 20“. And that was I targeting 50. Eventually, about 80 turned up.

03) Microphone.
The wireless mike cost me 150,000vnd (about US$8) to rent. I only used it for 10mins.

04) Drinks vouchers.
While the declared number of drinks vouchers for the early birds was 20, I actually had 30 to give to the 1st 30 who turned up.

05) What’s my name?
You’ll expect Elizabeth, the host, to be active with Twitter in supporting this event. Truth is she had to look up on the net to recall her Twitter’s name :-)

06) What is Twitter?
According to Timen, a few fellows that night asked him ‘What is Twitter’?

07) Tweeters vs. non-Tweeters.
I estimate there were about 70% that night who have a Twitter account. The rest are non-Tweeters. But it’s all cool. This is fundamentally a networking event- Twitter or not.

08) I was high.
While I may talk a lot on this website and in social events, if u know me, I’m actually an introvert. So how do I deal with situations when I have to talk a lot? Alcohol. Prior to this Tweetup, I had already done a big mug of Vodka with RedBull plus 4 cans of 333.

09) Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse…
I had actually written a mini script for my 10mins of fame with the mike. And spent A LOT of time rehearing and rehearing. But stage fright got to me and I did not let go some of the I-think-it’s-very-funny-jokes. One of them is to share about how, because Eds_m is on a 2 years tour of duty in Saigon, she actually flew in, from Malaysia to Saigon, her 2 cats and 1 dog.

10) Ending
The last to leave the Tweetup was I, Nathan and Hendrik close to 11pm.

Ed_s, that’s a really cute photo of you. Sorry for calling you a 40yo middle-class American. ;-)

Andrew Duck

Will you be holding another one in the near future?

Vietnam720

Hi Andrew,

Yeah, next one is next month. U joining us?

Andrew Duck

Will try – depends on dates. Was away for this one. I see there is a barcamp tonight, unfortunately without the bar :P

Vietnam720

Ah, how did u know about the meeting? Join us?

The next Saigon Tweetup should be either 13th or 20th Sep. Will confirm soon. U happen to have a books to sponsor as lucky draw? :)

Andrew Duck

I RSVP’d for the meeting – but then promptly forgot about it until I saw someone mention it on twitter again.

What type of books? I travel light now, but we might be able to figure something out.

Vietnam720

I’ll make it my personal mission to remind u on the next Tweetup :)

Made that comment about books coz I read u are in the publishing industry. We can take this offline to discuss further (Ben at Vietnam720 dot com) but in general, I guess books or vouchers suitable for both the expat and local community?
